Threaded through in the education system of Cyprus is for every learner to learn about their civilization and tradition and to develop respect and love for their national heritage, become aware of their national identity, the Greek language, the Greek Orthodox religion and their history. The government of Cyprus has invested heavily in the education of its citizens. Through the Ministry of Education and Culture, the educational system is managed effectively. Information on the educational institutions in Cyprus is important information for families who are deciding where to live in Cyprus. The  Cyprus education system is divided into different levels:

Primary Education


Primary education is compulsory for six years. Students then attend secondary school for six years, comprised of lower and upper levels lasting three years each. The primary education is divided into pre-primary and primary. The pre-primary is compulsory for all the children that have reached the age of four years and eight months by the 1st of September of the year their tuition is due to begin. Attendance of Primary Education is compulsory for all the children that have reached the age of five years and eight months. Primary education is free at state schools administered by the Government. This is one of the advantages of living in Cyprus.   The student can also study in a private school and fees may vary.


Secondary  Education


Secondary General Education offers two three-year cycles of education – Gymnasio (lower secondary education) and Lykeio (upper secondary education) – to pupils between the ages of 12 and 18. Secondary education should provide the learner with opportunities to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes for the development of the self and others. Secondary education is free in Cyprus. This is one of the advantages of living in Cyprus. Private technical schools are an expensive alternative to public secondary schools. They are supervised by the  Ministry of Education and Culture and last for six to seven years.

Technical and vocational education


If the student elects not to attend the Lykeio,  one might choose to attend the Technical and Vocational Education which usually runs for 2 years. The training will prepare the students to enter the workforce or focus on their area of interest.

Higher Education

Cyprus has invested heavily in a high-quality European education system, with affordable university tuition costs and plenty of facilities and benefits. Achieving your chosen  Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Cyprus that will match the standards of international universities worldwide comes easy. Higher education is composed of public universities, private universities, public non-university level institutions and private non-university level institutions. Public universities are created as public corporate bodies and are academically autonomous. Non-university level public institutions operate under other than the Ministry of Education and Culture ministries.
